Springing Into Spring
While you are reading this I am most likely in surgery, having a full knee replacement. Yup, at 53. While on one hand I would really rather not have surgery, I am thrilled there is a solution. I look forward to being pain-free and having greater functionality in my knee. And yes, I will be writing about the experience for a future issue of Holos.
But as a result of my surgery this week, I am too distracted to reflect on midlife in a coherent way. So instead, I want to share a few items I have found interesting of late.
See you on the other side.
Something to Read
How could you not fall for a highly intelligent, problem solving Octopus. Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt is a lovely story about a friendship between an older woman and an octopus which makes for a good vacation read. Buy now and save for summer.
And for those who prefer non-fiction, I have 2 recommendations. First, Tracers In The Dark: The global hunt for the crime lords of cryptocurrency by Adam Greenberg is a gripping true crime read. The title pretty much says it all, so if you like mysteries, crime, and crypto you can’t go wrong with this book.
And if you are looking for a deep dive into how to optimizing your health for longevity, I highly recommend Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity by Peter Attia.
Lastly, I am continually fascinated by the topics of success and achievement. If you are also interested in these topics, you will enjoy this issue of the Curiosity Chronicle which discusses the Trap of the Extraordinary. The underlying premise is how our culture “conflates success with the achievement of the extraordinary. Winners are those who achieve the extraordinary, losers are those who do not.” Such a narrow focus on success is a huge roadblock to finding purpose and meaning in life.
Something to Watch
I am a complete sucker for sports movies. Grab your friend, spouse, partner, child or go by yourself, but go see Air, the new movie about the making of the Nike Air Jordan shoes. It is fantastic!
Something For Listening
My favorite non-health related podcast is the All In podcast. I loved it from the beginning, but it took my husband a few episodes to warm to it but now he loves it too. So, give it a chance. It is insightful, intelligent, and candid…which is seemingly hard to find these days in the current event space.
Something New I Love
Having 3 boys means constantly battling “boy smells.” My new favorite weapon are the candles and diffusers by LAFCO. The diffuser containers are beautiful pieces of art and take this category to a whole new level. My favorite scent? Celery Thyme.
Parting Thought
I hope wherever you are you are getting an opportunity to enjoy spring. After this long, cold, rainy winter, I am enjoying the sun and warmth as well as some golf!
To be continued…
